Madison proclaims April 21–25, 2025 Arbor Week; city forester urges focus on young trees

The Madison Common Council unanimously proclaimed April 21–25, 2025 as Arbor Week at its April 15 recessed meeting and heard brief remarks from City Forester Ian Brown about the city’s tree canopy efforts.
Alder Tishler read the proclamation, citing the city's 35-year recognition as a Tree City USA and listing canopy and stormwater benefits. "Whereas the city of Madison has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA for the past 35 years," the proclamation read. The resolution urged residents to celebrate and plant trees for the well-being of present and future generations.
Ian Brown, the city forester, thanked the council and said Madison is "approaching our hundred thousandth community tree." He emphasized focusing on supporting young street trees so they mature into canopy trees that provide long-term benefits. "We're really focused on trying to support those little trees that we have and making them into big trees," Brown said.
The proclamation (Legistar 87,695) was moved by Alder Tishler, seconded by Alder Vittiver and recorded as a unanimous vote with no objections.
