Museum move progresses; exhibit renderings near complete and furnace repair may delay research center opening

Parks, Culture and Recreation staff reported that exhibit renderings for the new museum space are about 90% complete and that reader rails are under construction by the Lacey Makerspace while platforms are being built by Salmon Bay Woodworks. Staff said those items must be completed before they can set a firm opening date for the new space at the Belltown Center.
Staff also reported an urgent mechanical failure at the Russell House: the furnace/air-conditioning unit for the research center and collections area failed. According to staff, the unit was originally installed in February 2007; maintenance is soliciting bids for replacement and the department is pursuing emergency repairs. Staff warned that scheduling and replacement timelines could delay access to the research center and collections.
Program activity reported to the commission included three history talks this season. The April 10 program on the history of whiskey in Washington state drew 61 attendees, 27 of whom attended in person; quarterly program summaries listed 859 people served across recent programs. Staff noted outreach efforts, including presentations to the Lacey Sunrise Lions and Gateway Rotary, and said a new property management company for museum facilities has been responsive so far.
Commissioners were told platforms and reader rails must be finished before the installation and public opening can be finalized. Staff also reminded commissioners that museum staff will present project updates to City Council in May, and that commissioners should hold May 20 on their calendars for the annual museum report and the Ken Bosley historian award presentation.
