Kings Local School District officials told the board they reached a short-term agreement with Mercy hospital to open 55 parking spaces for high school students as a trial to ease parking pressure on nearby streets.
Superintendent Sears said Mercy leadership responded quickly to district inquiries and agreed to a limited number of spaces. The district ordered parking permits, will distribute them to selected students and will set expectations for behavior and safety. Sears said the district expects to roll out the pilot early next week, with placards and monitoring in place.
Sears noted the new high school design will add more parking long-term, but interim solutions were needed. The district plans to track the trial and assess whether to expand the arrangement next school year.
During public participation Loretta Brayton raised concerns about parking enforcement, described warnings given to students and said off-campus neighborhood safety was a concern; Brayton also referenced a separate neighborhood safety incident unrelated to district parking. Sears and board members said they appreciated community input and described steps taken so far, including increased signage and coordination with township and sheriff’s office patrols.
The board did not take a formal vote on the Mercy arrangement during the meeting; district staff said they will finalize operational details and communicate them to families.
