Kings Local presents updated high school design; groundbreaking set for May 28

Architects and district design staff presented the latest interior design concepts for the new Kings High School and outlined a construction timetable that includes early work this summer and a ceremonial groundbreaking scheduled for May 28 at 11 a.m.
Charlie Janigan and Jenny Gallo walked the board through updated images of the main entry, arena and theater lobby, auxiliary gym, theater stage, reception and community room, counseling suite and the Innovation Hub. Janigan said the project is roughly “60 to 70% complete” in the design development phase and that SHP and HTC are preparing independent construction cost estimates this month.
Gallo described interior elements intended to reinforce wayfinding and school identity — for example, a teal color palette on half of the building and a green palette on the other half to help people identify academic wings. She said classroom finishes include acoustic baffles, additional cabinetry and flexible furniture that district teachers requested.
On schedule, the team said it will issue early construction packages — clearing, foundations and steel — to allow work to begin in June. Janigan noted the steel procurement process takes months and cited completion of construction documents by August as a major milestone needed to move construction forward.
Janigan described the building as approximately 285,000 square feet and said the design team’s goal is to align the district and contractor estimates and keep the project on budget.
Board members expressed broad support for staying on time and on budget. Superintendent Sears and others said early packages and clarified scope would help HTC and the district reconcile estimates before major procurement.
