Council approves creating principal planner position to fill planning vacancy

Councilmember (Speaker 1) moved to approve the personnel change, which was described by a Planning staff member (Speaker 2) as a way to “make this office a little less linear, widen it out some, and create a principal planner job, to fill this vacancy. It'll save the city money and accomplish what we need within the office we're planning.” Speaker 1 seconded the motion and the council voted in favor.
The staff member explained the Principal Planner would serve as the lead planner responsible for the Planning and Zoning Commission, while the zoning administrator would oversee the Zoning Board of Adjustment. The staff member said the two positions would be peers, each at grade 26. The discussion emphasized restructuring an existing vacancy rather than creating an additional headcount.
No public comments or legal authorities were cited during the discussion. Council members did not amend the proposal on the dais and recorded the vote as approved.
The vote moved the personnel change forward; staff will carry out the reclassification and related administrative steps for the Planning office.
