Fostoria Public Affairs Committee schedules Safety Town, June convos and backs resident-led block watch

The Public Affairs Committee of Fostoria announced a May 16 Safety Town for preschoolers entering kindergarten at Fostoria Junior Senior High School, set a June 7 community "convos with council" event at the Fostoria Cabish Memorial Library pending room confirmation, and said neighborhood block watch groups should be led by community members, during a meeting that approved prior minutes and adjourned at 5:05 p.m.
The committee said Safety Town will be presented by the Fostoria Police Department, Fostoria Fire Department, the Fostoria Chamber of Commerce and Fostoria City Schools, with additional local donors. The program is open to preschoolers entering kindergarten and is limited to 30 students; the committee said this year’s event is the first in some time and organizers plan only one session this year to gauge interest before expanding to multiple days next year.
A Public Affairs Committee member told the meeting the neighborhood block watch is intended to be headed by community members rather than city employees. The committee said the police department is willing to send officers to make presentations when officers’ schedules allow, but will not lead the block watch groups.
The committee reported that the most up-to-date City Council agenda is now posted on the city website under the council tab on the Monday before each council meeting. Committee members discussed locations for future convos with council and agreed to keep the fall-quarter scheduling pattern; they proposed Saturday, June 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fostoria Cabish Memorial Library, subject to room confirmation. A committee member also proposed the Public Affairs Committee meet the following Tuesday, June 17 at 5:00 p.m. in Council Chambers to follow up.
During the public-comment portion, resident Deb Tyson asked about street-repair progress and specifically referenced Fremont Street; the transcript records the question but does not record a staff status update in response. The committee also reported that thank-you letters to applicants for the council-at-large vacancy were mailed on behalf of the full council, and members encouraged residents to vote on May 6.
