Lorain County officials held the first of two public hearings on a proposed $5 permissive vehicle‑registration fee that would be collected at license‑plate renewal and restricted to capital improvements of county roads and bridges.
The fee, proposed under Ohio Revised Code section 4504.24, would add $5 to renewals and is intended for planning, construction, improvement and repair of public roads, highways and streets, County Engineer staff said. "They are $5 fees that are collected on, renewals of your license plate," said Sean Defala of the Lorain County Engineer's Office.
County engineers told commissioners they currently maintain 269 miles of roadway and 235 bridges, and that roughly 71 bridges are rated about a 5 on the county rating scale used to program replacements.
