The Shakopee Public School District recognized volunteer service during its April 14 board work session, honoring individuals from across district schools for work ranging from classroom support to event organization.
Lisa Ron, the district’s director of community education, said the district counts 2,342 volunteers who together contributed about 5,700 hours this year. "Our volunteers' commitment and spirit are truly invaluable," Ron told the board, adding that the district uses Scott County’s hourly rate to estimate the value of volunteer time at roughly $190,000.
Ron described the scope of volunteer work: assisting in work rooms cutting and laminating materials, chaperoning field trips, supporting reading and math instruction, helping with vision and hearing screenings, staffing PTOs and committees, and maintaining school gardens and learning resources. Certificates were handed to individual volunteers from multiple school sites.
The recognition was presented as part of the board’s regular agenda; no formal board action was required. Board members and staff thanked volunteers and invited honorees to be photographed following the presentation.
The district will continue to tally volunteer hours and incorporate volunteer engagement into its community education planning.
