Shelton council advances multiple wastewater and environmental projects; some moved to May 6 action agenda

The City of Shelton City Council on April 15 adopted an amendment to a reclaimed-water project and approved a late contract amendment for landfill monitoring, while placing two major wastewater design contracts on the action agenda for the council meeting on May 6.

Public Works Director Brent Armstrong told the council, "We received a $3,200,000 legislative appropriation grant to design and construct a new headworks facility at the MBR plant," describing the MBR headworks upgrade as a multi‑phase effort to increase the plant's capacity. He said the design contract before the council would be roughly $408,000 and that the total project was expected to be "roughly around 4,000,000 as of today dollars." Armstrong also described the plant's current flows and the intended capacity increase.

Why it matters: the design and permitting steps the council advanced affect wastewater capacity, habitat work on Goldsboro Creek and ongoing monitoring of a capped landfill where Ecology is requiring testing for PFAS, the group of persistent contaminants often called "forever chemicals."
