Resident urges repairs at Lantern View Park; staff outlines repairs and mulch schedule

Britney Brady, a Saint John resident, told the Park and Recreation Board that Lantern View Park playground equipment and surfacing are in poor condition and raised safety concerns.
"The park is dangerous," Britney Brady said, describing bowed plastic borders around mulch, large holes in the surfacing and chunks missing from slides and a rubber bridge. She said the playground feels "extremely not safe" and that many neighborhood children use the park.
Parks staff responded that the town is scheduled to repair the black plastic borders and to add mulch as part of the department’s routine two-year cycle of playground surfacing work. Staff also said they would inspect the slide and bridge immediately; if an element appears unsafe staff said they will block access until repairs are completed. "We are slated to go out there and repair those plastic borders and we will be getting to do mulch this year," staff said.
The board discussed whether to close the equipment while staff inspects it; staff asked residents to report any new damage and confirmed they would follow up with a site visit. The transcript indicates staff walked parks earlier with the town’s insurance representative and did not observe the same missing chunk reported by the resident; staff nevertheless committed to re-inspecting the playground and, if necessary, cordoning off the equipment.
No votes were taken on this item. Staff committed to an inspection and to scheduling needed repairs during the planned maintenance work this summer.
