Cleveland Rape Crisis Center highlights sexual-assault awareness, local services in Mentor

Nicole McKinney Johnson, president and CEO of the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center (CRCC), briefed Mentor City Council on April 15 about CRCC services in Mentor and across Northeast Ohio as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Johnson said CRCC provides free, 24/7 support through a crisis hotline, text and online chat; trauma-informed counseling for survivors of all ages; victim-assistance and advocacy to help survivors navigate law enforcement, courts, schools and hospitals; and prevention and education programming in Mentor schools and community spaces. She identified CRCC’s Mentor office at 8224 Mentor Avenue and gave public office hours for the local office.
Johnson said CRCC serves Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Trumbull and Lake Counties (spelled in the meeting as neighboring counties) and noted the organization is celebrating its 50th year. She encouraged council members and residents to refer people in need to CRCC, to champion prevention in schools and workplaces, and to speak publicly on behalf of survivors. Andrew DeFreitas, senior director of public affairs, accompanied her.
Council thanked Johnson for the organization’s local presence. No ordinance, appropriation or formal city action was requested or taken on the presentation.
