Planning board backs special sign district for Broward County convention center

The Fort Lauderdale Planning and Zoning Board on April 16 voted to recommend approval of case UDPT‑24011, creating a special sign district to allow a message center sign integrated into the Convention and Visitor Bureau (CVB) building at the Broward County Convention Center complex.
Applicant representatives said the proposed digital message center is incorporated into the CVB building’s architecture rather than placed on a standalone pylon. The presentation said the sign serves a facility on a state highway, adjacent to a complex that accommodates large conventions, and that the site meets the city’s locational criteria for message center signage.
Board members discussed the sign’s size, placement and nighttime luminance. The applicant said the sign would comply with Fort Lauderdale’s existing regulations on brightness, character and movement; staff and the applicant indicated the sign would not be flashing, scintillating or exceed the city’s lumen limits for such installations. One board member noted the sign would have luminance comparable to the existing Parker Playhouse sign, which is permitted under current rules.
The applicant characterized the design as architecturally integrated and more visually restrained than a typical freestanding pylon sign. Staff confirmed the special district would apply only to the identified parcel and that all other sign code requirements and permitting steps still apply. The board moved to recommend approval of the special sign district and associated text/graphic approvals, forwarding the recommendation to the City Commission for final action.
