Council transportation committee to consider automated enforcement camera legislation and proviso lift

Councilmember Tammy J. Saka, chair of the Transportation Committee, told the Seattle City Council on April 14 that the committee will meet April 15 at 9:30 a.m. to continue deliberations on automated traffic safety camera legislation and related actions.
Saka said the transmitted legislation would allow the city to expand automated enforcement cameras outside school speed zones only if it conforms with state law changes made in Olympia in 2024. "This legislation ... is required for us to expand any new cameras, camera automated enforcement cameras in our city," she said, and noted the committee will consider a proviso lift that would allow the executive to spend funds the council previously appropriated during the 2024 budget to expand cameras beyond school zones.
Saka also said the committee will receive a briefing on an alley vacation near City Hall in District 7 and encouraged public attendance. She noted that the council previously authorized appropriations for automated enforcement cameras and expanded 39 school-zone camera locations in the 2024 budget.
No formal council vote on the legislation or the proviso lift was taken during the briefing; those items were scheduled for committee consideration on April 15. Committee materials and the transmitted legislation will be posted before the meeting, Saka said.
