Board assigns committees, affirms goals and reports progress on Kingfisher Community Park

The East Kingston School District board reviewed committee assignments tied to three district goals — academic growth and learning outcomes, community engagement and oversight/implementation of a capital improvement plan — and discussed near-term staffing of those committees.

Board members agreed that JT will temporarily join the policy committee while the board transitions responsibilities; Brandon (SAU staff) will add JT to the policy email list and invite him to upcoming policy meetings. Board members noted the policy committee meets monthly during the school year and that the committee develops model policies for SAU 16 districts in coordination with legal counsel.

Community engagement and Kingfisher Community Park work were highlighted. Board members thanked PTO volunteers and teacher Carolyn Jablowski for fundraising and organizing; the PTO funded initial trail and outdoor classroom work and community members have offered labor and materials. Maintenance coordinator Mr. Mizzie reported a local company agreed to drop donated wood chips when in the area; the district will coordinate equipment and SAU resources to move material to park trails. An Eagle Scout candidate has also offered to consider the park as a potential service project.

Other committee reports included a strategic planning summit held in March with strong community participation, an upcoming joint-board superintendent-evaluation meeting that will include a non‑public review of the superintendent’s goals and evidence, and wellness and safety committee updates. The district noted no action items from the safety meeting; first responders participated and the SU maintains leadership on safety procedures.

Board members said they will revisit assignment alignment and goals in August/September when new school-year goals and committee membership are set.
