Papillion La Vista approves calendar changes to recoup instructional time after seven weather days

The Papillion La Vista Community Schools Board of Education approved changes to the 2024–25 school calendar on April 14 intended to recoup instructional time the district lost to seven weather-related closures.
Under the approved adjustments, April 21 — originally scheduled as a staff professional-development day with no students — will become a regular student day. April 28 will add afternoon preschool minutes that were not previously scheduled. For seniors, the board approved making May 8 a full school day (instead of a partial day) and designating May 9 as the last day for seniors, with the traditional checkout, graduation practice and senior celebration scheduled. To preserve staff professional development time, the district will move the staff development day to May 27.
Ms. Siri explained the revisions were chosen to maximize meaningful instructional time for students and to preserve critical professional-development sessions — particularly curriculum-implementation work for elementary English language arts — that help teachers prepare for the next school year. Board members discussed alternatives (adding minutes across the year) and said staff would return with possible calendar adjustments for 2025–26.
The motion to adopt the calendar changes passed unanimously on roll call. District officials said seniors who still need to complete requirements will be allowed to come in after May 9 to finish and graduate with their class.
