Board approves $310,000 change order for this summer’s HVAC upgrades to cover supply, wage and additional classroom needs

The Berkeley County Board of Education approved a change order that increases the previously approved $3 million authorization for summer HVAC upgrades to $3,310,000 to cover updated contractor pricing, supply‑chain and tariff impacts, and replacement of three additional classroom HVAC systems.
District staff said the adjustment reflects increased costs for labor, sheet metal and larger HVAC units and the practical need to order equipment now because of lead times. Eric Hasselwalder, a representative from CMTA (the district’s contractor/engineer on the projects), explained those market factors and confirmed contractors had already been scheduling equipment orders for the summer window.
The change order covers previously approved work — conditioning gymnasiums at selected schools and replacing units in multiple classrooms — and adds replacement of three more classroom units at Martinsburg High School. Staff said the work will proceed during the summer construction window and that the board had authorized CMTA to proceed with procurement under the revised authorization.
Board members approved the change order on a voice vote; district staff said the work must proceed quickly to hit summer schedules and to ensure classrooms are ready for the next school year.
