Student council reports and All‑State choir recognitions spotlight school-year activities

Students and staff took the March 18 meeting floor to present recent school activities and to receive board recognition.
Kauai Elementary student council advisor Mrs. Coy introduced student council representatives and described the council's selection process. Rather than holding elections this year, students and parents completed joint applications; the council set attendance expectations, behavior standards and an assignment requirement that students avoid missing class work. The council tracks volunteer hours and plans to award certificates reflecting service hours; the advisor said one student had logged more than 10 volunteer hours while several logged six to seven hours.
Student council members described recent activities including a hat day fundraiser that raised $350 for a therapy dog, a canned-food drive that collected 569 cans (the Ohio State team was reported as the winner), Veterans Day displays that included military uniforms and a Purple Heart on loan for show, thank-you letters assembled for veterans, a toy/donation collection of $51 for the Lucas County Humane Society, and ongoing help to classroom teachers with projects such as sorting and repackaging materials. The council also plans to collect thank-you cards for bus drivers on April 22 and support a book-exchange by grade level.
Board members praised the students for their presentation. Later in the meeting, music teacher Megan Porter of Star Elementary introduced six students who were accepted last spring into a 123-member All‑State Children's Choir. Porter described the rigorous selection process — two contrasting unaccompanied songs, stamina, steady beat and pitch — and introduced the students by name: Anne Cunningham, Mila Coors, JT Zysmanski, Natalie Uroth, Scarlett Wagner and Ruth Chavez. Porter and the board presented certificates recognizing the students' selection and commended their effort and preparation.
The board noted the student presentations and added the recognitions to the official minutes.
