Superintendent launches 'Aldine Accelerate' reading challenge; board recognizes staff, student achievements

Superintendent Dr. Latonya Goffney announced the launch of a districtwide reading initiative, “Aldine Accelerate,” asking students districtwide to help reach a collective goal of 1,000,000 minutes of reading by the end of the school year.
"This challenge is open to every student across our district, from pre-K to high school seniors," Goffney said, urging students to log minutes using Beanstack, an interactive reading platform. She said the school that logs the most minutes will win a traveling trophy and monthly districtwide recognition. "Log those minutes, aim high, and let's reach 1,000,000 minutes," Goffney told the board and audience.
The board used the meeting to honor staff and students. The Aldine Impact Award was presented to Sharon Kennedy, pregnancy-related services coordinator at Hall Success Academy, and to other named staff members and teams who led initiatives in attendance improvement and Unified Sports. Chief Communications Officer Sheila Adams and Trustee Connie Esparza introduced several staff recognitions.
Chief of Schools Javier Villarreal described a campus incident where Grantham Academy staff administered CPR to an assistant principal who had a seizure; the board recognized the staff with a Humanitarian Award for their life-saving response.
The board also recognized numerous student achievements in science fairs, performing arts, choir, band, orchestra, mariachi, debate and theater. Several students and teachers were named for awards and advancement to regional and state competitions; the district highlighted partnerships that provided access to performing-arts field trips and fellowships.
Why it matters The reading challenge is a districtwide literacy push intended to encourage reading routines across all grades. Awards and recognitions highlight programs and staff that district leaders say contribute to student success and community engagement.
