The Auburn School Committee approved multiple routine motions at its April 16 meeting, including formation of an advisory committee for Auburn Middle School (AMS), a transfer of $149,700 from the technology equipment capital reserve to buy Grade 7 iPads, and a contract with Harriman Associates to serve as architect and engineer of record for the district’s facilities plan. The meeting also passed the consent agenda, which included approval of the meeting agenda, minutes of the April 2 meeting and multiple certified contract renewals.
Consent agenda: The committee approved the consent agenda after the chair asked for a motion; the consent items as announced included approved certified-contract renewals for a long list of staff and administrators and ratification of some administrative contracts. The chair called for a motion and the committee recorded the item as carried.
Formation of AMS Advisory Committee (motion approved): The committee voted to authorize the formation of an AMS Advisory Committee, which the facilities subcommittee described as the next step in work to reconfigure the middle school to bring sixth grade into the middle school and to align the advisory committee’s criteria with the architect/engineer of record once that team is selected.
Transfer for Grade 7 iPads (motion approved): The committee approved transferring $149,700 from the school department’s technology equipment capital reserve fund to purchase iPads for Grade 7. A staff member identified as Peter was present to answer questions; Business Manager Amanda Kuchar and members confirmed this expenditure fits the district’s plan for sustainable capital financing of classroom hardware.
Contract with Harriman Associates (motion approved): The committee approved entering into a contract with Harriman Associates to serve as architect and engineer of record for the duration of the district’s facilities plan. Committee members who had worked previously with Harriman described the firm’s interview and prior performance positively.
Votes and procedure: For each motion the meeting record indicates the chair solicited a motion, a motion and second were recorded, and the chair announced "Motion carries"; the transcript does not record a roll-call tally or individual named votes for these items.
Why it matters: The advisory committee and selection of an architect/engineer are steps in a facilities plan that includes a sixth-grade reconfiguration; the technology transfer funds will buy student devices for Grade 7.
