Committee told bill would update state fertilizer label rules to match 2024 AAFCO standards

Senate Bill 833 would update Oregon statutes to adopt the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials' 2024 labeling standards so manufacturers can use a uniform label across states, department officials said.
Deputy Director Jonathan Sandow and program staff told the Agriculture, Land Use, Natural Resources, and Water Committee that Senate Bill 833 would update Oregon law to reflect AAFCO's 2024 fertilizer and soil amendment labeling standards.
Sandow said Oregon's truth-in-labeling program tests on-shelf fertilizers and licenses manufacturers to ensure label accuracy and to help users make correct application decisions. Gilbert Udi Veveldes, program manager for the fertilizers program, said AAFCO updated its label panel guidance in 2024 and that states are updating statutes or rules to maintain national uniformity. Sandow said California has already adopted the changes through legislation and Washington is pursuing similar updates.
Proponents said SB 833 is technical and intended to facilitate interstate commerce and regulatory consistency; it would not change enforcement approaches or program administration. Committee chairs closed the public hearing with no vote recorded at the session.
