Committee recommends updated leaves-of-absence policy, adds paid day for birth, adoption and wedding

The Marshfield Finance Budget and Personnel Committee on April 15 recommended that the Common Council approve an updated Leaves of Absence policy, numbered 3.545, which consolidates and clarifies multiple leave types previously included in a separate emergency leave policy.
Human Resources Director Sarah Dressel said the updated policy pulls out bereavement and related emergency-leave language into the leaves-of-absence policy and removes a separate educational leave category by covering those requests as personal leave. The policy adds birth of a child, adoption of a child and a wedding as events that qualify for one paid day off if the event falls on the employee's regularly scheduled workday; Dressel said the city will not pay that day if the event occurs on a weekend and the employee does not normally work those days.
Dressel said most changes are organizational and wording updates to avoid repeating state and federal legal language; she recommended that the committee forward the revised policy to the Common Council. Committee members moved, seconded and approved the recommendation by voice vote.
The revised policy will be forwarded to the Common Council for final approval.
