Committee adopts pickleball court rules; adds vaping ban and calls for signage

The Marshfield Parks, Recreation and Forestry Committee voted April 9 to adopt rules for the city’s new pickleball courts and added a vaping prohibition plus a call for additional signage at likely court entrances.
The rules as approved restrict the courts to pickleball play only, prohibit activities such as cycling, skateboarding and rollerblading, require use at players’ own risk, set drop-in play and tournament/reservation procedures, limit games to 11 points when others are waiting, and bar food, glass and non-service animals from the playing area. Committee discussion added vaping explicitly to the list of prohibited items and recommended posting the most important rules at the primary entrances because the courts sit close to the skate park.
Committee member Ben moved to approve the rules with the vaping addition and extra signage; the motion was seconded and adopted on a voice vote. Ben said: “I'll make a motion with the addition of the vapes and the extra call for the skip points.” The committee chair called for the vote: “All in favor? Aye.” No roll-call tally was recorded in the transcript.
Staff noted courts may be reserved for organized play through the Parks and Recreation office, that children 12 and under must be supervised, and that organizers have scheduled at least one tournament for the year and are working on a second.
Separately, the committee heard related updates: the pickleball lights contract was previously awarded to Mercury Electric for $83,000, and Shallows Nursery agreed to donate half of a planned landscape installation for the facility while the pickleball group will fund the other half, producing no net cost to the city for that planting work. Staff said the landscape installation may not be completed before a June tournament depending on contractor schedules.
Committee members asked staff to ensure signs are placed at the entrances most likely to be used by skateboarders and others who may mistakenly enter the courts.
