City staff updated the committee on construction progress at the new recreation center and adjacent pool complex, reporting recent milestones and a conditional timeline for opening the leisure pool and slide.
The presentation said the surge tank is poured; siding and interior finishes are progressing; HVAC has been started; and site work including curbing and asphalt is underway. Staff said the leisure pool and slide are being prioritized and that the city has requested approval from the Illinois Department of Public Health to open those amenities while lap lanes are undergoing a 28-day coating cure process.
“We're hoping that they let us open up the leisure pool and the slide by Memorial Day weekend,” a staff member said, adding the lap lanes would open on the previously stated mid-June timeframe if the coating cures as scheduled.
A resident raised a technical question about pool waterproofing membranes at the wall/floor joint. The resident identified herself as Vernal Air (Ward 3) and asked whether a membrane had been installed where the wall ties into the pool floor. Staff responded that the pool concrete was specified at a higher grade and that the finished coating will provide an extra level of watertightness; staff also offered to provide pictures to the resident after the meeting.
Staff said contractors are working Saturdays and progressing on access control and site amenities so the facility can meet planned opening windows. The committee was told opening of some features remains contingent on state permitting and final inspections.
Ending: Staff will follow up with the Illinois Department of Public Health and provide membrane documentation or photos to the resident who requested them; final opening dates remain contingent on approvals.
