North Miami Commission for Women asks council to let outgoing members remain until replacements are appointed

The North Miami Commission for Women asked Mayor and City Council on April 15 to change the commission’s governing resolution so current members remain in office until their replacements are formally appointed.

Commission leaders said the change would prevent gaps that have delayed the commission’s work. Chairwoman Dr. Lamour said the commission could not meet earlier this year because several appointees had not yet been seated, and that left the commission short of members needed to schedule events such as Women’s History Month programming.

Commissioners described the remedy as an amendment to the resolution that created the commission’s appointment terms. They said city staff advised that any change would require council approval. Assistant City Manager Katia Filipo was identified in the discussion as the staff contact to confirm the required process.

No formal motion to amend the resolution was made at the meeting; commissioners agreed to prepare a written proposal to present to Mayor and Council so the city can consider an ordinance or resolution change. The request is a direction for follow-up rather than a decision by the commission itself.

Commission members asked staff to put the issue on future agendas until a formal council response and any charter/resolution text is available. The discussion emphasized preventing future gaps in quorum and avoiding interruptions to scheduled programming if appointments are delayed.

The commission did not identify a statutory citation at the meeting; it recorded staff guidance that an amendment to the board’s governing resolution would be required and that council action is the next step.
