Prairie View highlights 'ripple effect' outreach, Discovery Center upgrades planned

Prairie View elementary staff described a year of family engagement, a staff-recognition initiative called the "ripple effect," and planned upgrades to Discovery Center spaces during a report to the Holmen School Board April 14.

The presenter, identifying themself as the Prairie View principal, described "ripples" as short notes of recognition for students and staff and shared examples of family events—Snuggle Up and Read, PTO Bingo Night, Sip and Paint and a large family picnic—that organizers said strengthened community ties. "These are just a few of the bullets on your on you see on the screen here," the presenter said, adding that the building is "full of goodness."

The principal told the board the school is upgrading Discovery Center spaces in two wings this summer to better support STEM activities and technology access; one kindergarten–first-grade Discovery Center will become an enclosed room while other spaces remain open so larger grade groups can use them.

On student supports and testing, the principal said teachers are deliberate about preparing students without overemphasizing state tests: "We often talk about at Prairie View, encourage kids to do their best and forget the rest." The report also described a data-team process to avoid "putting any student in a box."

Board reaction: Trustees praised Prairie View's community engagement and said the district's elementary schools show strong family involvement. No board action was required; the presentation was informational.

The board also thanked staff for planning and noted the school’s planned Discovery Center upgrades will proceed as timing allows.
