Council approves fourth Flock Safety camera subscription for northwest corridor

Glendale’s Common Council approved the purchase of a fourth Flock Safety camera subscription to extend license-plate reading coverage into a northwest approach to the city. Police staff said the city has leased three Flock cameras since July 2022 with a roughly 50% vehicle-locate rate and that the system helped in arresting suspects in multiple incidents.
The police chief told the council the vendor’s current annual price is $3,000 per camera; the written quote listed $4,250 for hardware and installation, but staff said using one of the city’s existing poles could reduce the city’s initial cost and likely keep the annual expense just over $3,000. The chief said the added camera covers “one of the only thoroughfares in and out of the city” not currently monitored by the system.
Council members voiced support for the camera based on public-safety benefits. One alderman described having ridden with police and backed the request; another said the camera would have provided investigative information on a recent incident. The council approved the subscription by voice vote after a motion by Alderman Shaw and second by Alderman Doherty.
Staff noted the system does not automatically flag vehicles lacking plates but that officers can query footage by make, model and color to obtain investigative leads. Police and staff said they will continue to evaluate camera siting and potential costs.
