During public comment at the April 14 Sylvania Schools Board meeting, a community speaker who identified herself as Adrienne urged the board not to eliminate a high‑school counselor position and proposed a split assignment to balance caseload differences between Northview and Southview.
Adrienne said the proposed reduction would add at least 60 students per counselor at Northview and push caseloads “70 students above the American School Counselor recommendation at 250 students per counselor.” She presented current and projected caseload figures included in materials she provided to the board: she said Northview’s counselors currently have about 259 students each and that without changes their caseload could rise to about 318; Southview’s caseloads were presented as dropping slightly from 291 to 281 in the projection. As an alternative she proposed splitting the position so the counselor would serve both schools on a part‑time schedule (for example, 3 days at one school and 2 at the other) to even workloads.
Adrienne said, “I believe that there should be no reduction in a counselor position,” and urged the board to consider the split‑position approach as an ethical way to balance caseloads. The speaker requested the board not to lose the counselor position entirely and provided a visual of 2024–25 caseloads to support the recommendation.
After public comment the board moved into executive session to discuss compensation and employment of personnel; meeting participants stated the board would not be taking action following the executive session.
The transcript records the speaker’s caseload numbers and the recommendation to split the position; it does not show a board vote or formal action on the counselor position at the April 14 meeting.
