District to open nonresident transfer portal May 1; lottery, attendance and discipline rules explained

The Warrick County School Corp will open its nonresident and intra‑corporation transfer portal on May 1 and close it July 1, district officials said at the April 14 meeting.
Dr. Walter Lambert, director of student services, told the board the district publishes capacity figures for each school and grade to show how many nonresident students it can accept. He said the posted numbers reflect classroom capacity and staffing; most schools have capacity to accept additional nonresident transfers, but Castle Elementary was close to capacity at some grade levels.
Dr. Lambert described the district’s process if applications exceed capacity: the district will review its capacity and, if it cannot accommodate all applicants, it will conduct a public lottery to choose students. He said the district has not previously needed lotteries but expects more nonresident applications now that Indiana no longer allows transfer tuition for some situations.
The presentation included district screening rules: applicants must provide records, transcripts, attendance and discipline histories; students with 10 or more days of suspension or 10 or more unexcused absences at a previous corporation are ineligible for transfer. Dr. Lambert said attendance and discipline can preclude transfers but that the district cannot deny transfers because of low grades or disability.
Dr. Lambert said transfer forms will be posted on the district website and that families will be able to request intra‑corporation transfers (that is, attending a different district school) using the same portal.
