Racine Unified School District human resources staff proposed increasing the hourly rate paid for summer curriculum writing from $26 to $30 at the March 3 work session, saying the higher rate should help recruit experienced teachers to participate.
HR staff said the district set aside $150,000 in the budget to cover the increased rate and that last year the district spent approximately $119,991 on curriculum writing (staff said they would provide a breakdown of the number of participating teachers on request). Board members asked for comparables from other districts; staff said comparable rates vary and that Milwaukee offers higher hourly rates in some categories. Administrators also noted summer school pay is higher ($45 an hour) and acknowledged that competing opportunities affect teacher participation in curriculum writing.
Board members asked that the district provide a list of comparable rates from peer districts and asked for historical usage data to show how much of the budget was used in previous years. Staff said they could provide those data points in a follow‑up.
