Students, parents and staff urge board to keep Teton High athletic director and to separate AD and academic‑dean roles

Dozens of community members, including many Teton High School students, addressed the board April 22 to urge retention of the athletic director and to press trustees to keep athletic director duties separate from an academic dean role.

Speakers described personal experiences in which the athletic director helped them improve attendance, grades, behavior and post‑secondary opportunities. Student speakers said the AD had driven recruiting exposure, helped them secure college opportunities, and provided consistent mentorship; several parents and coaches echoed that testimony, saying the AD’s work extended beyond practice plans to counseling and community coordination. One parent read a letter from a son serving out of state on a mission describing lessons learned through athletics; other witnesses recounted examples of travel to larger meets that raised student performance.

At the same meeting the administration proposed combining activities/athletic director duties with an academic dean role at the high school as a budget‑sensitive approach; commentators and several trustees urged the board to separate those duties into two full‑time positions if funding permits, arguing the combined role risks diluting both functions. Several speakers suggested the role requires a coach‑mentor temperament and broad availability outside regular school hours. The board said it heard the speakers and will consider the comments as it finalizes staffing decisions after budget confirmation.
