Nelson County Board approves Seal of Arts Excellence for high-school arts pathways

The adoption gives the district authority to award a seal or special cord on diplomas to students who finish the required courses and a culminating project for one of five pathways: instrumental music, vocal music, media arts, visual arts and theater. The Kentucky Department of Education established the Seal of Arts Excellence in 2022.
Dr. Gilbert, the district arts lead, told the board the state requires students to complete three sequential courses in a pathway, then demonstrate skill in a capstone project. "Once you have taken these courses and participated in the arts, you are required to finish a capstone project, a culminating project that demonstrates your skill and expertise in this art form," she said. The district has 60 students who have identified interest in pursuing the seal, she added. Board members said the seal recognizes sustained coursework and is not granted for mere participation.
Board discussion focused on the program’s structure and local readiness. One board member asked whether all three courses are available on high school campuses; Dr. Gilbert said yes and noted the district hopes to pursue dual-credit options in the future. A board member moved to approve the seal as presented; another member seconded the motion. The chair called for voices, and the motion passed by voice vote with no opposed votes recorded.
The board did not attach additional funding or implementation dates to the vote; staff said recognition (cords or diploma inscription) and local honors-night acknowledgment would follow established graduation and recognition procedures.
The district will now incorporate the seal into local graduation recognition and publicize course sequences and capstone expectations to students and families. The board indicated it expects staff to return with details on capstone evaluation and any recommended diploma/text changes.
