Board approves across-the-board 2% raises, field trips and policy updates
Summary
At its April meeting the Superior School District board approved 2% pay increases for multiple employee groups, authorized two overnight student trips and approved several routine committee items and policy revisions.
The Superior School District Board of Education voted to add a 2% base-step increase for teachers, support staff, professional staff and administrators during its April meeting, and approved routine field trips and committee recommendations.
The personnel decisions include a teacher pay increase that the board said would add $314,485.76 to the payroll cost; support-staff steps will increase by $161,391.08; professional staff will see a $24,605.20 increase; and administrator steps will rise by $50,596.47. The board said the teacher increase was ratified by the Superior Federation of Teachers on March 20, 2025. One board member said they and another board member would abstain from the teacher salary vote; a board member who was absent indicated support for the increases prior to the meeting.
Board members also approved two overnight student trips: Spartan Spin students to the JEA/NSPA fall conference and eighth-grade science students to the Lake Superior Youth Symposium. Motions to approve both trips were seconded and passed with no recorded opposition in the meeting minutes.
Other approved items included acceptance of gifts, grants and bequests received in March 2025; the April 2025 new hires and separations report; updates to the employee handbook for 2025–26; and payment of preapproved bills. The teaching and learning and budget/insurance committee reports were accepted as informational items.
On policy matters, the board completed a second reading and action to rescind the district policy that had implemented the 2024 Title IX administrative approach and directed staff to revert to the district's prior policy and corresponding administrative guideline. Board materials said the change followed a federal court decision affecting the 2024 Title IX regulations; the board described the action as reverting to the earlier policy language.
Minutes from the March 17, 2025, meeting were approved at the start of the session.
Board members used the public comment and board reports portions of the agenda to thank departing trustees and to note ongoing budget challenges and efforts to address inequities in pay. The board said additional, more comprehensive compensation reviews will be scheduled over the summer.
