Staff presented five mounting and layout options for the plaque. Commissioners favored a pair of freestanding post plaques (one on each side of the main steps) because the layout preserves symmetry and allows a second plaque later; Commissioner discussion criticized mounting plaques directly into the brick wall as potentially damaging and less flexible.
Trustee Fisher suggested a wording change in the second paragraph to match language used on the plaza: replace the phrase “war dead” with language closer to “those brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to our country.” Staff agreed to adopt that edit and to correct punctuation and capitalization noted during review. The commission voted to approve option 4 and directed staff to finalize the plaque wording and to confirm fabrication lead times with the plaque vendor.
Staff said the plaque line item is not yet budgeted and will coordinate with administration on funding; commissioners agreed to proceed with one freestanding plaque initially (left side of the steps) and leave open a second plaque pending budget and finalized language. Staff will circulate a final draft of the plaque text to commission members before ordering and will seek expedited fabrication if Memorial Day installation is possible.
