Barberton council adopts five measures, approves liquor license and board appointment

At its April 14 meeting the council approved five ordinances or resolutions, appointed a design-review board member and recorded no objections to a new liquor license; several measures were adopted with emergency language.
Barberton City Council on April 14 adopted a series of ordinances and a resolution and took routine administrative actions during its regular legislative meeting.
Key actions taken: Ordinance 32-2025 (street dedication for a portion of Newell Street and North [York] Avenue) was adopted after a motion to suspend the rule for immediate consideration. Ordinance 40-2025 approved a term sheet between the city and the Barberton Community Foundation to provide a grant for the proposed justice center and city hall; the ordinance carried with emergency wording. Resolution 41-2025 authorized the mayor to enter into a final contract with the Ohio Department of Transportation (PID 122321) for sidewalk and related improvements on Van Buren and nearby areas and was adopted. Ordinance 42-2025 authorized payment of $4,355 to Minutemen HR Management Services and was adopted. Ordinance 43-2025 transferred $50,000 from the rental-registration fund to the Project Impact fund (see separate coverage).
Council also received a liquor-license filing for La Mia Cucina LLC (T1, D2 and D3 categories) at 161–163 Second Street NW and recorded no objections from the ward councilperson, the safety director or the police chief. The city appointed Jason Miller to the Design Review Board for a term through Dec. 31, 2027.
Most measures were considered under suspension of the rules and adopted on roll-call votes. No recorded negative votes were entered on the measures as presented and one council member was absent for several of the roll calls.
Council members and staff said the grant-term sheet for the justice center is another step in project development and that the ODOT resolution is required to secure state contracting authority for the Van Buren sidewalk work. The finance director and mayor provided brief remarks on budgeting and project next steps where relevant.
