The Hinsdale Historic Preservation Commission on April 14 voted to recommend a matching grant to the Village Board to help cover a new roof at 518 South Garfield Street, a roughly 100-year-old home whose original slate roof is failing.
Owner Christie Nicholson Sharma described evidence that the house’s original slate was taking on significant water and that full-slate replacement would be about twice the cost of a DaVinci composite slate alternative. Sharma said the composite option costs roughly $41,000 and that experts recommended the lighter composite material both for cost and to reduce maintenance and future repairs.
Commission discussion included technical advice about masonry, ivy and building maintenance from commissioners and local craftsmen; commissioners advised thorough masonry evaluation once the roof work is complete. The commission voted by roll call on a motion to approve the commission-level preservation incentive application and then voted to recommend the matching-grant request to the Village Board. Commissioners Gonzales, Harlow, Olsen and Chairman Bonin recorded “aye” votes on the recommendation.
Staff and commissioners offered to be resources during the owner’s broader work on masonry repair and future projects. The matching-grant recommendation now goes to the Village Board for final approval.
