The Hinsdale Historic Preservation Commission on April 14 approved a preservation incentive application for 640 South Park Street—the Beck House—clearing a rear and side addition, a covered patio and related exterior alterations while granting alternative bulk zoning relief, a building permit fee waiver and expedited processing.
The commission’s approval, adopted by roll call, followed presentations from project representatives and a review by staff. Architect Dennis Parsons and contractor/representative Katie Knoebel described retaining the primary historic rooms and stairway while expanding the house to the west and restoring an existing screen porch. Parsons said the design keeps the front appearance unchanged because a state easement prevents enlarging the front porch.
The commission’s recommended motion—recorded in the meeting packet and read into the record—covers alternative zoning relief for floor-area ratio (FAR), waiver of the village building permit fee and expedited permit processing for the project. A roll call vote recorded Commissioners Gonzales, Harlow, Olsen and Chairman Bonin voting “aye,” and the motion carried.
Commissioners and attendees praised the work to preserve historic character while providing modern interior updates, noting the house’s importance to the streetscape and its potential to be used by the family for years to come. Staff confirmed no Village Board action was required for the items approved by the commission.
The commission wrapped its discussion with brief comments of support and best wishes to the owners and project team as construction proceeds.
