County manager reports: fire training accreditation, Hurricane Helene debris program ends, and community events

Lowndes County's county manager reported several administrative updates to the commission, including a successful fire-department training audit, the official end of hurricane-related debris removal and ongoing community engagement with builders and event organizers.

County manager Miss Dukes said Chief Young was notified by the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council that the department passed an audit of training records and accountability requirements with no negative remarks. "We are very proud of you and your team," she said, thanking the chief.

Dukes said the county's debris removal program after Hurricane Helene officially concluded after sign-off by the Army Corps of Engineers and the county's contractor, Ash Britt; she said the chairman and county staff met the contractor and Corps representatives to close the program. Dukes added the county still has a few one-off pickups but that the formal removal program ended.

Dukes also told commissioners she and staff met with the Home Builders Association Governmental Affairs Committee to review permitting and inspection performance; she praised staff work and said the conversation was largely positive. She listed upcoming community events: a "Lunch on the Lawn" kickoff to the Blueberry Festival, a plein-air painting competition, and recognition of Valdosta Middle School as a military flagship school on April 16. She reminded commissioners county offices would be closed for Good Friday on April 18.

Commissioners acknowledged the updates and congratulated department staff on the training audit and other accomplishments; no formal action was required on the report.
