Utah legislature adds $1 million for food-processing grants; applications open May 1

Caroline Hargreaves, director of the Marketing and Economic Development Division at the Utah Department of Agriculture, said the Utah Legislature appropriated $1,000,000 for the Utah Food Security Processing Grant to help small businesses expand local processing capacity.
Hargreaves said the grant program “provides grants to small businesses to increase the local processing capacity of agricultural products produced in Utah.” She announced that applications will open on May 1 and encouraged businesses to apply, calling the application process “a super simple and straightforward application.”
The Marketing and Economic Development Division supports Utah farmers, ranchers, food businesses and rural communities through marketing programs, grants and economic-development initiatives, Hargreaves said. She listed existing programs the division manages, including Utah's Own and Farm to School, and said the division recently created a regulatory navigator position to help businesses understand and comply with regulatory requirements.
Hargreaves directed interested businesses to the agency website, ag.utah.gov, for additional information, application materials and contacts.
