Jade Fran, who identified herself as a volunteer with a bereavement-support organization, said the group offers immediate support to families who have lost someone to suicide and that “what I’m asking for is a ban on conversion therapy.” Fran told the council that, in her view, medical and mental-health institutions regard conversion therapy as harmful and that she believes the practice increases suicide risk for minors.
Fran noted that, in her account, 13 Ohio cities had adopted local bans and urged Grandview Heights to add its name to that list. She said she could not confirm whether conversion therapy occurs locally but asked the council to send a message of support to LGBTQ youth by prohibiting the practice.
The request received no formal council action at the meeting. Councilors did not introduce an ordinance or refer a draft ban to committee during the public-comment period; the item remains a citizen request rather than an action pending before the council.
