County begins long-term digitization of records; project funded with ARPA to create off-site backups

Benton County staff updated supervisors on a scanning project intended to digitize historic land records, supervisor minutes and other archival materials, and to post them on the county website.
The project is a partnership between the recorder's office and another county office; staff said the digitized records will include section, township and range, land-lot details and old supervisor minutes going back to the 1860s. A staff speaker said redaction is required for certain private information such as birth records and other sensitive entries and that the process will take time.
Staff emphasized the project creates an off-site archive and a fire backup for courthouse records. The transcript records that ARPA funds supported the digitization and off-site archiving work. “And it's a fire backup. Like, if we ever lost the courthouse due to a fire or tornado, I mean, all these things will be archived off-site. Off-site. Right. And that was all funded with ARPA money,” a speaker said.
Officials said the project will be ongoing and that digital indexing will make historic records searchable by public users, with staff continuing to add more records over time.
