Commission approves Sofia's Bar and Grill transfer; neighborhood group offers support, late-night hearing to be scheduled

The City of Springfield License Commission on April 9 approved the transfer of a liquor license for the business operating at 465 Redwood Boulevard from Father's and Son's Pizza Inc., DBA Sofia's Pizza and Sports Bar, to Rocky and Louie Inc., which will operate as Sofia's Bar and Grill.
Attorney John Drost of Fitzgerald Law represented the buyer and said Rocky and Louie Inc. intends to buy the assets of the current operator; Michael Zuko was presented as the manager of record and described more than 30 years of experience in the food-and-beverage industry, including work at the Ranch Golf Club and other local restaurants. Zuko said he would leave his current employment if the transfer goes through and that the new operation plans a late-night menu and occasional later closings.
"We currently close at 9 p.m. We're gonna be staying open closer to 11, 12 o'clock with a late night menu," Zuko said, adding that operations would not typically run to 2 a.m. except for special events.
Juan Latorre, vice president of the 16 Acres Civic Association, told the commission the applicants met with the civic association on April 2 and the board gave a unanimous letter of support, which Latorre said had been dropped off at City Hall. The chair acknowledged receipt of that letter.
The commission approved the transfer by roll call and instructed the applicant to coordinate with the license office to schedule a separate late-night entertainment hearing because the new owners intend to remain open later on some nights.
