Texarkana Youth Advisory Council members report back from Beaumont summit, describe civic and service work

Two Texarkana Youth Advisory Council members described lessons from a Beaumont summit, outreach and service projects including Arbor Day tree giveaways and a food packaging event, and plans to expand TYAC’s membership and social media presence.
Two members of the Texarkana Youth Advisory Council on April 14 gave the council a short report on their recent YAC Summit in Beaumont and on local service projects.
Trinity Chase, a Pleasant Grove ISD student, said the Beaumont summit offered breakout sessions on public speaking, college applications, career planning and fundraising, and allowed TYAC members to present about Texarkana to their peers. The summit also included networking with other youth advisory councils and speakers who discussed civic participation.
Brianna Lowe said TYAC is a relatively new group in Texarkana and that strengthening the council’s social media would help publicize events and volunteer opportunities. She told council members TYAC members hope to recruit more than six new members and to work with local high schools to expand volunteer activities.
Chase and Lowe also recounted service activities: they participated in an Arbor Day event where trees were handed out to the public and in a “Tacos for Life” mobile pack where volunteers packaged more than 100 bags of food for children in need.
Chiquita Burks, the city liaison to TYAC, was introduced at the meeting and the mayor thanked the students for their presentation and invited the group to return with future updates.
