Waunakee students present DECA and FBLA activities, report competition qualifiers and fundraisers

Students and club leaders from Waunakee High School presented a "Warrior Spotlight" to the Waunakee Community School District Board of Education, summarizing competition results, fundraisers and upcoming activities for DECA and FBLA.
Vishnu Khanna, president of Waunakee DECA, said competitions are central to the program and listed recent results: nearly 50 students competed at the district level (the most in the club’s history), about 15 students advanced to state competition, and four students qualified for the international competition. "In terms of DECA districts, competition is a really big part of DECA," Khanna said. He and other officers described district and state events, fundraising for travel to International Career Development Conferences and regular club service projects.
DECA officers described several fundraisers and service activities from the school year: concessions, a Bucky Book sale, a chocolate-walk charity event, Salvation Army bell-ringing, Rotary Lights participation, a food pantry holiday fundraiser and a Polar Plunge for Special Olympics fundraising. Khanna said the chapter had raised more than $700 for Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) fundraising activities this year and noted plans for an end-of-year shoe drive in partnership with Soles4Souls, with collection boxes to be placed around the high school and other community sites.
Haley Reynolds, vice president of FBLA, and Katie Ganorski, director of events and activities, reported a 16.5% increase in FBLA membership year over year to 148 members. FBLA said it had 56 students attend the regional competition, 26 students placed at regionals and 30 members attended the state leadership conference in Green Bay; the chapter reported raising more than $5,000 for a fundraiser titled "50 Meals for 50 Years," organized with community partners and intended to support the Waunakee Food Pantry during the holidays. The students also listed business tours, guest speakers and plans to attend the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim with about 10 members planning to attend.
Advisors and board members praised the students’ community outreach and extracurricular efforts. Mrs. Meinholtz, an advisor referenced in the presentation, said the students generate most of the ideas and that advisors are supportive: "the students came up with all of that. We as advisors are just along for the bridal." The clubs asked the board to note the students’ fundraising and volunteer work; the board presented certificates of appreciation to the student officers at the meeting.
The students’ presentations included plans to use partner donations to offset travel costs for international competitions and continued local fundraisers in spring and summer months.
