Mayfield Heights City Council on April 14 approved hiring GDP Group to design the 2025 Tennis Court Improvement Project and authorized soliciting bids for construction.
Resolution 2025-14 authorizes the mayor to enter an agreement with Glaus, Pyle, Schomer, Burns and DeHaven, Inc., d/b/a GDP Group, for engineering services for the tennis-court work, with engineering costs capped at $17,000. Council later approved a separate motion to solicit bids for the construction phase.
Project scope and costs: Council packet materials attached to the resolution list two probable approaches: repair and resurfacing, estimated at $150,000 to $175,000, or total reconstruction, estimated at $340,000 to $370,000. Staff said the final scope will be determined after geotechnical corings and borings are completed.
Timing and use impacts: Engineer Mr. Chini estimated the on-site construction could take roughly 30 to 45 days. He said the work will include new fencing and wind screens and that courts would likely be out of service for a period but expected to be usable later in the season; he told council, “30 to 45 days is what I’m estimating.” Council members discussed timing around community events and asked whether the courts could be scheduled for later in the summer or September. Council also heard that severe cracking currently limits safe play and has driven some users elsewhere.
Why it matters: the city’s courts require repairs that affect public recreation and safety. The council approved the engineering contract so staff can finalize design, perform borings and corings, and prepare bidding documents to move the project to construction.
Votes and next steps: Council unanimously approved suspending the rules and adopting the engineering resolution and then approved the solicitation of bids. The engineering firm will perform geotechnical work this week, staff said, after which a final construction estimate and construction-administration costs will be presented to council.
