Alexander County Schools board honors student contest winners and staff

At a recent Alexander County Schools Board of Education meeting, the board recognized student contest winners across grade levels, members of West Alexander Middle School's Battle of the Books team, Governor's School selectees and district staff who received statewide awards.
The Alexander County Schools Board of Education used part of its meeting to recognize students and staff from across the district for academic and extracurricular achievements.
District communications staff said the board called forward winners of the Little Read writing and art contests, naming Mackenzie Eichard (Bethlehem), Lillian Reedy (Stony Point), Janessa McCorkle (Ellendale), Dakari Lan (Wittenberg), Natalie Hallman (Bethlehem) and Otis McNair (Sugarloaf) as district honorees. The board said every second grader in the district read La Guitarista by Lucky Diaz as part of the Little Read program; school-level winners advanced to a district contest judged by students in an education class at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
The board also recognized the West Alexander Middle School Battle of the Books team and coach Aaron Lewis. The team members read or studied a set of 20 books for the contest, won their local battle and placed second in the regional competition. The board read the names of team members in public: Audrina Arnett, Lane Bumgarner, Sophie Black, Owen Crawford, Bryson Grenier, Ava Locklear, Colter Minton, Aubrey Powell, Madeline Wingler and Lisonbee Barlow.
Two Alexander Central High School students were acknowledged for selection to Governor's School: Isaac Bowen and Jackson Ruff. The board said Governor's School offers four weeks of intensive coursework in the natural sciences and is a longstanding state program.
Dr. Alicia Clore, the district's assistant superintendent for human resources and auxiliary services, was noted for completing the North Carolina School Superintendents Association's Aspiring Superintendents program. The board also recognized Dr. Danita Dalrevis, district director for communications and testing accountability, who received two Blue Ribbon awards from the North Carolina School Public Relations Association: one for a special project on vaping that included videos from Alexander Central Principal Jacob Veil, and one for a writing series on teen cell-phone use and social media.
The recognitions concluded before the meeting moved into the regular business agenda.
