Mitchell band director seeks $4,000 grant from sports authority for performing-arts chairs

Joel Van Persum, director of bands at Mitchell Middle School and a member of the Mitchell Music Boosters, told the board he submitted a grant request to the Sports and Events Authority for $4,000 to purchase performing-arts chairs for stage use.
Van Persum said Mitchell hosts multiple all-state music events that draw multiday participation and overnight stays, including middle school all-state band and middle school all-state jazz band, and that the chairs would be used for those events and other performances. He said the Mitchell Charitable Foundation approved part of the purchase but did not cover the full cost.
A board member who also serves on the charitable foundation said foundation members suggested the Sports and Events Authority might fund the remainder because the events bring attendees who use local hotels and restaurants. Staff confirmed the SEA will review the grant in its next meeting, which the presenter noted is on Tuesday.
No formal action or commitment by the SEA was taken during this meeting; the board was informed of the pending application and encouraged to consider it at the upcoming SEA meeting.
