Norwalk committee hears composting options as residents, experts press for school and community programs

The Norwalk City Ad Hoc Incident Resilience Committee on an evening meeting heard a presentation about municipal and community-scale composting and organics diversion and received public comments urging the city to involve residents and schools in any sustainability rollout.

The discussion focused on how composting can reduce landfill and incinerator use, site and permitting constraints for local operations, and recent state regulatory changes affecting large commercial generators. No formal policy or contract was adopted; council members and members of the public agreed to follow up with staff and outside presenters for more information.

Tim (presenter), identified as a composting operator who works with Bridgeport and Stratford, explained the basic process and benefits of managed aerobic composting, saying, "If a pile is kept aerobic properly, there will be no smell. It smells like dirt."
