District safety update: four Q3 school deficiencies noted; Sebastian River incident prompts communication review

The Indian River County School District presented its quarter three safety and security update and described four documented deficiencies found during unannounced state reinspections, plus districtwide “best practice” opportunities that could lead to future citations if not corrected.

The district’s safety specialist, Mr. Teske, said Kate Ziebel from the Office of Safe Schools performed unannounced reinspections at Gifford Middle School, Osceola Magnet, Indian River Academy and Dodgertown; perimeter checks, walk-throughs and documentation reviews were “perfect” at several schools. He said four schools received formal deficiencies in Q3—two charter and two public schools—and described each: a classroom device missing the Fortify FL reporting app; a front door left open at a charter campus; a rear gate left unlocked at one public school; and missing “hard corner” signage in a gym locker-room area.
