Lebanon City Council approved a $1,500 funding request on April 14 from the city's food-and-beverage fund to help the Black Box Theater Company print playbills and offset production costs for its spring show, "Finding Nemo Jr.".
Jennifer Miller, treasurer of the Black Box Theater Company board, described the group as a local youth theater organization that serves hundreds of children annually through seasonal shows, camps and classes. Miller said the requested funds would be applied to printing costs for playbills for the production, which staff and commissioners said involves several cast members and community programming.
A member of the Food and Beverage Commission told council the commission met with the Black Box representatives and unanimously supported the award. The commission noted the company runs year-round programming including camps, summer programs and a larger September circus event at the fairgrounds.
Councilmember motioned and the council approved allocating $1,500 from the food-and-beverage fund to Black Box Theater Company; the motion carried with a second from Rob Hawkins. Staff recorded the performance dates as June 4-8.
The Food and Beverage Commission described current sponsorships that the group has (15 to 20 sponsors ranging from $250 to $5,000) and said the grant would help cover remaining costs for the playbill and camp support. The funding was taken from the city's food-and-beverage allocation in support of arts and local events.
