Broken Arrow recognizes literacy training progress and state-champion athletics

Broken Arrow — Broken Arrow Public Schools used part of its board meeting to celebrate teacher professional development and the district’s championship athletic programs.
Educators and coaches said the recognitions reflect both classroom improvements and strong extracurricular success across the district.
Miss Sineas, a district literacy presenter, told the board that the district’s multi-year rollout of early literacy curriculum and professional development has reduced the number of students scoring below the 40th percentile on the state early reading screener by 840 students over two years. She added that between September and December of the current school year the number dropped by 425 students. The district recognized 45 teachers who completed cohorts 3 and 4 of LETRS training; 45 teachers completed the training, and a subset attended the meeting to receive certificates.
Miss Snyder introduced the girls wrestling team’s accomplishments. Coach Troy Lyles led the girls to a dominant season that included multiple tournament championships and a Class 6A state team championship for 2025. Individual honors listed in the presentation included two individual state champions (Emily Beckley and Kristen De La Rosa), two state runners-up (Tiffany Brashears and Kya Labaugh) and multiple third- and fourth-place finishers. The program was presented as ranked No. 1 in Oklahoma and No. 5 nationally; the coach and presenters noted the team was undefeated in dual competition and reported a team GPA of 3.6.
The board also recognized the boys wrestling team, introduced by a presenter honoring head coach Rodney Jones. Highlights cited included tournament championships, regional placings and two individual state champions (Jake Miller and Gunnar Wilson). The presenter said the program earned an OSSAA academic achievement award with a 3.33 team GPA and noted the team’s community volunteer work with youth wrestling.
The varsity cheer team was recognized for state and national accomplishments. The presentation listed the 2024 OSSAA performance state runner-up finish, 2024 OSSAA game-day state champions, and the 2025 UCA game-day national championship; the presenter said the nationals hosted more than 25,000 athletes and the team placed fifth in the UCA performance division and was featured on ESPN.
The recognitions concluded with individual student introductions and a group photo, as well as thanks from coaches and board members for community and administrative support.
The recognitions section of the meeting did not include formal board actions beyond the presentations and certificate handouts.
